SEAT is pushing forward with its product offensive - the SEAT Ibiza ST is the third body style in the successful compact line-up from the Spanish manufacturer. The estate version of the Ibiza is the perfect vehicle for a youthful and sporty lifestyle, combining all of the brand's strong values - it has an emotional and attractive design, it is dynamic and efficient, practical and easy to use and financially attainable. The SEAT Ibiza ST offers six modern engine variants and a broad range of options and technologies. Market launch is scheduled for May 2010, with excellent value-for-money across all variants.
In creating the Ibiza ST, SEAT designers have taken a highly functional concept and clad it in the Spanish company's unique design language. It retains the youthfully sporty character of the Ibiza model range despite the estate principle with its large luggage compartment. The roofline stretches far to the rear with the rear overhang integrated perfectly into the overall design, while the taut side profile lends greater visual impact to the proportions. The front end bears SEAT's hallmark "arrow design" and the rear end has an individual and distinctive look courtesy of the two-part light clusters.
With an overall length of 4.23 metres, the SEAT Ibiza ST is longer than the

The base volume starts at a generous 430 litres and can be expanded in steps by folding the split rear seat back. Engineers paid particular attention to optimising the breadth and depth of the load opening. The entire bodyshell is built with the exceptional precision and stiffness that distinguishes SEAT products.
The interior of the SEAT Ibiza ST offers an impressive level of space and a high-quality character. SEAT designers and engineers paid enormous attention to the tiniest details. All elements are functional, practical to use and meticulously crafted - as evident in the high quality of the materials. A taut feel to the cockpit, circular air vents, a modern gear stick - the emotional character expressed in the design of the SEAT Ibiza ST is also evident in the interior.
Sporty dynamics with a high degree of efficiency is par for the course with every SEAT and is derived from its state-of-the-art engines. The SEAT Ibiza ST comes with a choice of three petrol and three TDI engines with common-rail technology. Four of the six engines feature direct injection and turbocharging. They span an output range of 70 to 105 hp (51 to 77 kW).
A further guarantee of agility and dynamics is delivered by the precise and safe chassis. With its comprehensive equipment in the three model lines Reference, Style and Sport, its broad range of hi-tech optional equipment - such as the 7-speed DSG transmission - plus its sporty chassis, the SEAT Ibiza ST is set to be a real contender in the small estate car segment.
The design - clear lines with a youthful character
SEAT's Head of Design Luc Donckerwolke and his team faced a particular challenge when working on the SEAT Ibiza ST - the station wagon of the range. They had to reconcile the estate concept and its spacious load compartment with the youthful, sporty character of the Ibiza. Moreover, SEAT's designers created a highly functional vehicle, clad in the brand's innovative and distinctive design language.
The front view of the SEAT Ibiza ST is distinguished by one element that is a hallmark of the expressive SEAT style - the "arrow design". The trapezoidal, chrome-framed radiator grille bearing the SEAT logo, the V-shaped contoured bonnet and the low-set headlamps create the distinctive "arrow" contour. The visual of the bumper area is dominated by large air intakes, which also provide fresh air to the intercooler of the turbocharged engine.
Double headlamps in an elegant chromed housing come as standard starting with the mid-level equipment variant Style. The lower air intakes incorporate fog lamps that illuminate junctions with static cornering light at speeds lower than 40 km/h. As an option, SEAT also delivers the Ibiza ST Sport with bi-xenon headlamps incorporating AFS Technology (Adaptive Front lighting System). This incorporates two additional functions - active curve illumination and daytime running lights.
The upper edges of the headlamps - which have the visual effect of eyebrows - flow around the side into the "Linea Dinámica". Taking the form of a sharp edge, this runs rearwards across the doors. A second edge emerges at the front door handle, flowing over the vehicle's powerful rear shoulder and upwards towards the rear light cluster. A third edge above the sill rises slightly as it flows rearwards.
This alternation of the dynamic lines and the interplay of the taut surfaces work together to give the vehicle flank a sculptural feel. The flared, angular wheel arches, the wing mirrors mounted on the doors, the relatively acute angle of the C-pillar and the low greenhouse all underscore the athletic character of the SEAT Ibiza ST. An elegant roof rail is standard in all variants and, starting with the Style edition, is finished in chrome.
The rear end styling provides the SEAT Ibiza ST with a powerful conclusion. The roof spoiler incorporating the third brake light protrudes well over the large rear windscreen. The design of the rear lights emphasises the width of the vehicle, with their broad form running inwards to an elegant point. Where their extrapolated lines meet is the large SEAT logo that also serves as the handle for the rear hatch. The space for the registration plate is recessed into the bumper.
The SEAT Ibiza ST measures 4.23 metres in length, exceeding the five-door version by 18 cm. In terms of wheelbase (2.46 m), width (1.69 m) and height (1.44 m), both models are identical. The estate's cd value (in the entry level version) is only 0.325 - proof of the intensive fine tuning conducted by SEAT aerodynamicists together with their colleagues from the design department. The bodyshell surfaces, the underbody and also the airflow through the vehicle have been extensively optimised.
SEAT offers the Ibiza ST in a wide range of colours. The new flat and metallic paint finishes are called Blanco Candy, Rojo Emoción, Negro Mágico, Gris Luna, Gris Track, Azul Ada, Balea, Azul Nayara and Rojo Dakota. As an alternative, SEAT also offers three custom colours, called Speed Blue, Boal and Tribu.
The bodyshell - solid and safe
The dynamic bodyshell design of the SEAT Ibiza ST is sheer hi-tech. It sets benchmarks in the compact estate car segment - with its stiffness, quality, vibration characteristics and safety.
In evaluating a bodyshell, one criterion is especially important - the torsional stiffness. For the SEAT Ibiza ST, the static value is extremely high, at around 14,500 Nm per degree. This stiffness forms the basis for the sporty, precise handling, for the smooth body roll characteristics and for the quiet interior, which is void of groans, creaks and other irritating sounds. In all areas where passengers might sense vibrations - in the steering wheel, the floorpan beneath their feet and the seats - SEAT engineers focused on reducing vibration levels even further. The result of this detailed work is the subjective perception of quality - the feeling of solidity and safety conveyed by the compact estate.
The excellent stiffness is primarily due to the generous use of high and ultra-high strength steels in the body-in-white. The most innovative of these are the so-called hot-formed steels. A continuous furnace heats the sheet steel to extremely high temperatures of around 1,000 degrees Celsius. Immediately afterwards, they are formed in a water-cooled press tool - a drop in temperature that gives rise to extreme tensional stiffness. Hot-formed steels account for around 10 percent of the solid backbone of the bodyshell, integrated primarily into the B-pillar.
The layout and reinforcement of the bodyshell nodes also contribute to overall bodyshell quality. Welded surface and component joints subject to particularly high loads are reinforced with structural adhesive during the production process. Despite its excellent stiffness, the construction of the SEAT Ibiza ST is also incredibly lightweight. Here, too, ultra-high strength steels have a major role to play, because they require lower wall thicknesses than conventional grades. The bodyshell is a major factor in the low overall weight of the SEAT Ibiza ST - which stands at only 1,110 kilograms in the base version, including the usual 75 kilograms for driver and luggage.
The passive safety of the SEAT Ibiza ST is also largely the result of its exceptionally stiff bodyshell. A crossmember at the front distributes forces in the event of a front end collision to minimize deformation to the safety cell. The package of restraint systems is extensive - two front airbags, head/thorax airbags, as well as belt tensioners and belt-force limiters are fitted to the front seats as standard equipment. The special design of the head restraints on the front seats mitigates the risk of whiplash in the event of a rear end impact. The package is rounded off by three rear seat head restraints, as well as Isofix anchors for child seats.
The SEAT Ibiza ST also offers the very latest levels of pedestrian protection. In-house developed deformation elements in the front end of the vehicle minimise the effects of a pedestrian impact, as does the crumple zone beneath the bonnet. Low-speed impacts - such as car park collisions and the so-called "bumper crash" - result in no major damage, because the technical components are well protected within the bodyshell.
The interior - quality in every detail
The interior of the SEAT Ibiza ST offers an impressive degree of space and a high-quality character - with the feel of a car from the next class up. The brand's designers and engineers paid careful attention to the tiniest detail; all elements are functional, practical and attractive.
The seats have an ergonomic form and boast a low, sporty position that can also be adjusted upwards if required. This applies to the driver's seat in all equipment versions, while the front seat passenger has this feature starting with the Style line. The seats are well cushioned with high-density cold cure foam - combining a high degree of comfort with excellent physical support and outstanding long-distance performance. In the Sport equipment line, the seats come with pronounced side supports to provide the body with exceptional grip.
Adult passengers can also sit comfortably in the second seat row with ample head and foot room. The interior of the SEAT Ibiza ST comes as standard with three cup-holders, several spacious storage compartments - in the rear doors, too - and a 12-volt connector. Starting with the Style line, the rear backrests of the front seats are fitted with pockets.
The seats in the SEAT Ibiza ST are only one aspect of its excellent ergonomics - even long-distances are covered with ease. One further factor is the steering wheel, which can be adjusted both axially and vertically. The optional leather cladding on the steering wheel and gear knob comes as standard on the Style version.
All displays and operating interfaces are conceived to enable the driver to read and use them completely intuitively. An elegant hood curves over the instrument cluster, where the large dials for engine speed and road speed are recessed into sporty tubular housings. Red pointers contrast with the black background and white lettering. The display between the dials shows the fuel gauge, temperature gauge and information from the on-board computer, which is standard as of the Style line.
The operating interface for the air conditioning is on the lower section of the centre console. A manually controlled system comes as standard in the Reference line. For the Style and Sport versions, SEAT uses the technically sophisticated Climatronic; the fully automatic system includes a temperature read out.
Above the controls for the air conditioning is the operating unit for the audio system, which also incorporates an aux-in jack. Options include a USB interface for an iPod and a Bluetooth hands-free system for a mobile phone, as well as an installation kit for a mobile navigation system. The device can then be fixed with a mount to the upper side of the dashboard.
The taut, sinewy design of the dashboard, the circular air vents, the short gear stick - the sporty, emotional character expressed by the exterior of the SEAT Ibiza ST is also evident in the interior. Meticulous craftsmanship has been applied to all interior details, as demonstrated by the quality of the materials. All control elements move with precision, with defined lift and click tones. The surface of the dashboard is upholstered with foam padding.
SEAT offers a choice of four different upholsteries and three colours for the interior. In the Style and Sport equipment lines, black leather is available as an option for the sports seats, as is seat heating. There is also a further design package - incorporating light colours for the instrument panel and door trim, a front centre arm rest and additional storage facilities.
The luggage compartment - great practicality in a compact format
The large rear hatch of the SEAT Ibiza ST is easy to open and close thanks to its powerful gas struts. The opening mechanism is a brand feature - the large "S" emblem that lifts upwards. The hatch opens high enough to enable a tall adult to stand easily beneath it. The luggage compartment is clad in high quality and robust materials; it is spacious and boasts an extremely practical layout. Its volume measures 430 litres, with the loading edge at a height of only 578 millimetres.
There are two options for expanding the load area - both requiring very little effort. The particularly quick version involves releasing the rear backrest and folding it forward onto the seat cushions; starting with the Style line, the rear bench is split 60:40. Alternatively, the seat cushions can be stowed vertically to provide a virtually flat load surface. The compact head restraints are accommodated by niches on the underside of the seat cushions.
When loaded to the roof, the SEAT Ibiza ST offers a load capacity of 1,164 litres. With their front wheels removed, there is even space for two bikes. The maximum load is 515 kilograms.
The load area is fitted as standard with lighting and bag hooks. Also standard is the additional storage compartment beneath the folding load surface. The lower level accommodates the standard spare wheel. As an option, SEAT delivers nets for the load area. The range of accessories includes carriers and fixtures for the transport of skis, bicycles and roof boxes, as well as for a tow hook. Depending on the engine version, the SEAT Ibiza ST has a towing capacity of up to 1,200 kilograms (braked, on an 8 percent incline).
The Engines - sporty and frugal at the same time
SEAT sends the Ibiza ST into battle with a state-of-the-art range of engines - three petrol and three TDI units, the diesels sporting common-rail injection. Five of these engines will be available at market launch. Two of the six engines are three-cylinders, with the remaining four having four cylinders. Four of the units operate with direct injection and turbocharging, including the brand new and powerful 1.2 TSI. The six engines cover an output range of 70 hp (51 kW) to 105 hp (77 kW) and offer impressive performance combined with low fuel consumption.
The entry level engine in the SEAT Ibiza ST has a displacement of 1,198 cm3. The highlights of the three-cylinder unit are the alloy engine block and the quiet-running toothed chain driving the camshafts and the oil pump. A balance shaft facilitates smooth running characteristics. The 1.2 litre naturally aspirated engine generates 70 hp (51 kW) and produces 112 Nm of torque at 3,000 r/min. It pushes the estate car from zero to 100 km/h in 14.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 163 km/h, yet it consumes an average of only 5.5 litres/100 km. Transmission is courtesy of a highly efficient, lightweight and precise-shifting five-speed manual gearbox. The SEAT Ibiza ST 1.2 is available in the Reference version.
The mid-range petrol engine is the 1.4 litre unit. The 16V four-cylinder, with a displacement of 1,390 cm3, generates 85 hp (63 kW) and produces its maximum torque of 132 Nm at 3,800 r/min. The SEAT Ibiza ST 1.4 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 177 km/h. Its fuel consumption is 5.9 litres per 100 km. The 1.4 litre is available in both Reference and Style versions.
The most powerful petrol engine in the SEAT Ibiza ST line-up is the brand new 1.2 TSI. The four-cylinder, with a displacement of 1,197 cm3, features direct injection and a state-of-the-art turbocharger with charge air cooling. As a two-valve unit, it is engineered for low friction, a short warm-up phase and low weight. Without ancillaries, it weighs in at just 89.5 kilograms.
The downsizing principle applied to the 1.2 TSI means maximum performance with minimal fuel consumption. The small turbo engine generates 105 hp (77 kW) and produces its maximum torque of 175 Nm as low down as 1,550 r/min - remaining constant through to 4,100 r/min. This is sufficient to take the SEAT Ibiza ST from zero to 100 km/h in 10.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 190 km/h. Yet, in the EU driving cycle, it consumes only 5.3 litres per 100 km. It is available in the Style and Sport versions, with deliveries beginning in autumn.
The 1.2 TSI ECOMOTIVE Technology is even more frugal when combined with the stop/start system - this reduces fuel consumption to just 5.1 litres/100 km, a CO2 equivalent of 119 grams per km. The system switches off the engine when the car is at a standstill, the gearstick is in neutral and the driver removes his foot from the clutch. On depressing the clutch again, it restarts quickly and smoothly.
The third variant of the SEAT Ibiza ST 1.2 TSI comes with the 7-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission, which shifts through its gears incredibly quickly and smoothly. The driver can select from two fully automatic modes (Sport or Drive) or change gear sequentially. Both clutches on the DSG operate without a dedicated oil supply, which increases its already high level of efficiency. The first six gears have a close, sporty layout, with the top gear ratio operating as an overdrive for improved fuel efficiency. Its key data - 0-100 km/h in 10.0 seconds, a top speed of 190 km/h, average fuel consumption of 5.3 litres/100 km.
The 1.2 TDI in the SEAT Ibiza ST is also a hi-tech drive. The all-new three-cylinder diesel with balance shaft generates 75 hp (55 kW) from a displacement of 1,199 cm3, with its peak torque of 180 Nm available from 1,500 r/min. Engineers placed particular emphasis on intelligent thermal management and minimal internal friction. A new-generation common-rail system injects fuel at up to 1,800 bar, achieving up to six individual injections per cycle. This high-precision dosing ensures smooth combustion, high output, low fuel consumption and low emissions. With this three-cylinder TDI, the SEAT Ibiza ST accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 14.5 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 168 km/h. Its fuel consumption is a mere 3.9 litres - a CO2 equivalent of 102 grams/km. SEAT offers the 1.2 TDI in the Reference line.
The 1.6 TDI has a displacement of 1,598 cm3 from four cylinders and also boasts extensively reduced internal friction. Customers can choose from two versions. The first - available as Reference and Style - generates 90 hp (66 kW) and 230 Nm of torque, the latter from 1,500 to 2,500 r/min. This takes the SEAT Ibiza ST from zero to 100 km/h in 12.2 seconds. Its top speed is 178 km/h and its fuel consumption only 4.2 litres/100 km, equating to 109 grams of CO2 per km.
The even more powerful version of the 1.6 TDI produces 105 hp (77 kW) and 250 Nm, also from 1,500 to 2,500 r/min. With the four-cylinder power unit, the SEAT Ibiza ST sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 188 km/h. In terms of consumption, however, it too is satisfied with an average of 4.2 litres/100 km. SEAT delivers its most powerful diesel engine in the Style and Sport equipment lines.
The chassis - agile and safe
The chassis of the SEAT Ibiza ST boasts a highly sophisticated construction and has been refined with enormous attention to detail, endowing the estate car with sporty and safe road manners. The ESP electronic stability program comes as standard in Spain and key European markets, and engines with over 100 hp are combined with the XDS electronic differential lock.
Thanks to its balanced axle load distribution, low overall weight and wide track, the compact SEAT estate is exceptionally sporty, responsive and precise to drive, while its handling delivers a high degree of stability and safety. With extensive refinements, development engineers optimised the chassis for smooth vibration characteristics, giving the SEAT Ibiza ST the balanced body roll of a car from a larger vehicle class.
The front axle features McPherson struts with incredibly lightweight bearings for improved ride characteristics. The suspension elements are connected to a one-piece sub-frame that decouples them and the engine from the bodyshell, thus significantly reducing noise and vibration. The turning circle of the SEAT Ibiza ST measures only 10.48 metres - this and the excellent visibility around the vehicle body make child's play of parking and manoeuvring. The front axle track measures 1,465 millimetres.
The standard-fit electro-hydraulic power steering has a very direct, sporty setup. It delivers a precise steering feel, rapid responses and excellent directional stability. It has a variable output pump, which uses only the energy necessary for steering; remaining stationery during straight line driving. This solution offers major benefits compared with a purely hydraulic system that permanently circulates its oil volume.
The rear axle features a multi-link construction. The central element is a high-strength U-profile that functions as a stabiliser and is produced using a hydroforming process. Low weight is a major strength of this layout, benefiting the payload of the SEAT Ibiza ST. The second advantage is its space-saving, compact construction, which facilitates a low and flat load surface. The springs and dampers are separate from one another, giving development engineers a greater degree of freedom in defining the suspension setup.
As its designation would indicate, the SEAT Ibiza ST Sport has a slightly stiffer and more agile setup than the other two equipment lines. The front axle has a stiffer, more progressive layout, with the cross-section of the stabiliser being 20 instead of 19 millimetres. The rear suspension also has a stiffer setup, while the torsional stiffness of the rear axle has been increased from 10 N/mm on the Reference and Style versions to 15 N/mm.
SEAT has equipped the new Ibiza ST with a powerful braking system. On the front axle, there are internally ventilated discs with a diameter of 256 millimetres, with the rear axle featuring either drum brakes or solid discs, depending on engine variant. In a dangerous situation, the standard-fit brake assistant (EBA) independently develops full braking force, enabling the powerful system to make the most of its potential. In an emergency braking situation, the hazard lights are activated automatically.
The ESP stability system incorporates a number of important additional functions. For instance, it eases hill starts by maintaining braking pressure for a few seconds after the driver releases the pedal. It also monitors tyre pressure and indicates any possible loss of pressure via a cockpit display.
In the two top engine versions with 105 hp (77 kW), the SEAT Ibiza ST is equipped with the XDS electronic differential lock. When the electronics detect that the inside wheel of the front axle is losing too much load under cornering it applies a brief, light braking impulse. This way, the system compensates for understeering, making the handling neutral and ensuring powerful traction - very much in the style of a mechanical locking differential.
The SEAT Ibiza ST comes with a range of different wheel formats and designs, depending on equipment line. The Reference comes with 15-inch steel rims fitted with 175/70 tyres, Style has 15-inch alloy wheels with 185/60 tyres. The SEAT Ibiza ST Sport is fitted with 16-inch rims, clad in 215/45 rubber. SEAT can deliver fine alloy wheels as an option on all three lines - 15-inch for Reference, 16-inch for Style and dynamic 17-inch wheels for Sport. All tyres are optimised for low rolling resistance without any sacrifice in comfort, safety and handling characteristics.
Equipment - attractive and generous
On top of the many great features of the SEAT Ibiza ST comes one more that is particularly gratifying - its excellent value-for-money. For the Spanish and key European markets, SEAT is offering the new model in three equipment lines - Reference, Style and Sport. Even the entry Reference line boasts a level of equipment that is unusually high for the compact class. Its highlights include the ESP stability system that includes a hill start assistant and tyre pressure monitor, as well as a substantial package of restraint systems - including state-of-the-art head/thorax airbags for the driver and front-seat passenger and Isofix anchors for child seats on the two rear outer seats.
Additional comfort comes courtesy of electric windows at the front, an axially and vertically adjustable steering column, height-adjustable driver's seat, outside temperature display, radio with four speakers, steering wheel with operating units, air conditioning, a 12-volt socket and central locking. Features such as the storage bin beneath the load surface and the roof rail make the SEAT Ibiza ST Reference a highly versatile companion for everyday and leisure use.
The SEAT Ibiza ST Style was created with comfort in mind. It includes Climatronic, fog lamps with cornering lights, headlamps with a "coming home" function, electrically folding and adjustable heated wing mirrors, electric windows, a chrome roof rail, a height adjustable front passenger seat, 15-inch wheels, wing mirrors and door handles in body colour, leather steering wheel and gear knob, a speed control system and an on-board computer. A split rear seat back and an audio system with 6 speakers and a stand-alone control module are also standard.
The dynamic SEAT Ibiza ST Sport runs on 16-inch alloy wheels and 215/45 tyres and has a stiffened suspension setup. Sports seats are also standard in the ST Sport, as is dark-tinted glass for the rear windscreen. It also comes with all the features included in the Style version.
The range of special equipment is also high attractive and unusually extensive, with some elements grouped in packages. For the Reference line, SEAT offers the Comfortdrive package that includes fog lamps with cornering lights and heated wing mirrors. The SEAT Ibiza ST Reference can also be equipped with 15-inch alloys wheels and preparation for the portable navigation system.
Additional options are available for Style and Sport. These are alloy wheels in 16-inch format (Style) and 17-inch format (Sport), leather sports seats, USB and Bluetooth interfaces and an electric panorama sliding roof. Customers can also select a Design and Storage package and a Technology package. The latter includes a rain sensor, "Coming Home" function, an automatically dimming rear view mirror and an ultrasonic parking assistant at the rear. There is also a Winter package available for all three equipment lines, incorporating heated nozzles for the windscreen wipers, headlamp wash system and heated front seats. Bi-xenon headlamps with AFS are reserved exclusively for the SEAT Ibiza ST Sport.
The SEAT Ibiza ST is a true contender in the compact estate car segment, as the perfect car for customers needing plenty of room for family trips, but also looking for a vehicle with a high load capacity to accommodate their hobbies. Buyers are an average of only 42 years old, five years younger than the average age in the compact segment across all brands and models. Around one third of customers will be women. An important factor in the buying decision will be the emotional design - in market analysis, 34 percent of customers identified this as crucial - a clear confirmation of SEAT's expressive and distinctive design identity.Hide -
